What does an IO-Link master do?

An IO-Link master drives IO-Link devices and initiates IO-Link communication for the bi-directional exchange of data with the PLC - it is therefore the interface between the IO-Link devices and the PLC. IIoT-capable masters also allow access to the IO-Link cycle data and parameters via OPC-UA, MQTT and JSON REST API.

The latest generation of masters enables fast cycle times of up to 400µs and real-time capability to fully exploit the potential of fast IO-Link sensors. The master also supplies up to 4 A per port for connecting current-hungry actuators.

An IO-Link connection consists of an IO-Link master and an IO-Link device.

The master serves as a gateway and translates the IO-Link communication into all common Industrial Ethernet (OT) and corresponding IT protocols.

All IO-Link masters can, by default, also be used as inputs and outputs for switching signals (SIO mode). This makes it possible to operate conventional devices without an IO-Link interface on a master.

M12 connections for all functions: Cost-effective M12 A-coded sockets for the IO-Link devices, M12 D-coded sockets for the Ethernet connection and M12 L-coded plugs and sockets for the power supply make wiring simple, cost-effective and error-free.

Integrated energy measurement

The CM50I IO-Link master from Baumer can measure voltage, current and temperature on each pin. This enables energy consumption analyses and fast diagnostics in the event of a fault directly from the IT system.
