CMOS sensors have been available for many years and have proven their effectiveness in many applications. The latest CMOS sensor developments have considerably improved the image quality, resolution, and performance and thus also allow them to be used in applications in which CCD sensors were previously been used. Typical advantages of CMOS sensors include high frame rates, the flexible reading out of the sensor (ROI – region of interest), and low power consumption. In addition, they feature exceptionally limited noise, excellent homogeneity, and a high dynamic range and SNR (signal-noise ratio). In addition, the sensitivity has been improved, allowing very short or longer shutter speeds. Compared to CCD sensors, CMOS sensors therefore provide a significantly better price-performance ratio and allow a wide range of applications.
With the announcement of ON Semiconductor (formerly TrueSense/Kodak) in October 2019 that they plan to discontinue their CCD sensors as of 2020, users are now faced with switching to alternative CMOS cameras. This offers them the opportunity of utilizing the many advantages of CMOS sensors in applications.
